Foreword
This memoir is written for my grandchildren. If anyone else reads it and gets anything out of it, that’s "icing on the cake". My hope is that by sharing my life, my personal history, my thoughts, and my opinions you will have fewer unspoken and unanswered questions than I as a child about your family history, good and bad. After all, while each of us ultimately develops his or her own outlook on life, values’ system, and philosophy, others, and particularly our families, do have an influence and play a significant part in the process. If nothing else, I hope you find it a good "read".
The reason I decided to share my life in this way was not to magnify myself or my contribution to your lives. Quite the contrary, I am but one of many people I have personally known or met who seized the opportunities presented by our great and unique country and "moved the ball" forward for themselves, their families, and, hopefully others. In fact, there are millions, literally millions of Americans, doing this every day, without fanfare or celebrity or notoriety. As someone has said, "They’re just ordinary people doing extraordinary things" and I’m content to have been one of them.
I hope, grandchildren, that you will read and enjoy my memoir and get something out of it and apply it to your own lives. As a great man, who is little known today but who took a simple idea and "moved the ball" forward for thousands of poor caddies, their children and grandchildren, wrote for me one day, "Dear, dear Dave, the future does look bright. Exercise free thought." That was "Chick" Evans who founded the Evans Scholars Program. I’m proud of each and every one of you. I know that Chick would have been proud of you, too. You are his legacy.
