The 100Th AnniversAry of The boy scouTs of AmericA
A CELEBRATION WITH A PURPOSE
How best to celebrate the 100th birthday of an iconic American institution that will never get old?
That was the question as the Boy Scouts of America ap- proached 2010, the year of its centennial. The youth organization had come into being in the United States on February 8, 1910, when a Chicago publisher named William D. Boyce incorporated the Boy Scouts of America in Washington, D.C., after learning about the just-begun British program of Scouting.
The BSA’s historic anniversary was an opportunity to not only celebrate a century of adventure, leadership, and service, but also to introduce the lifelong benefits of Scouting to today’s youth— who will be the leaders of tomorrow.
