The importation of ski club members and national competitors were of utmost importance in establishing Colorado and the emerging ski meccas of Hot Sulphur and Steamboat, but so was the emergence of local talent. Early on, Horace Button gained local attention on Hot Sulphur’s ski jump and cross-country course.
If not for his talent, Button would be a mainstay for his unbridled enthusiasm for the sport. Over the years he would become one of the top competitors at Hot Sulphur and would travel regularly to other competitions in the West. Always finishing in the top standings for jumping and cross country, Button’s crowning achievement came when he just barely missed making the US Olympic Ski Team for cross country in 1928.
More important than his competitive career, Horace Button made his mark in the development and promotion of local skiing and skiers. He was the long- time president of the Hot Sulphur Springs Ski Club. He supervised and maintained the ski hill in town over the
