SCOUTINg’S CENTENNIAL SyMBOL
BSA 100th Anniversary Logo Contest winner
Philip Goolkasian with graphic designer Kit Hinrichs
28 Part One
A full two years before the BSA’s 100th Anniversary activities kicked into gear, Scouts were invited to take part in a logo contest to create the perfect symbol for the celebration. More than 4,000 young people entered their unique and original designs, representing all
50 states and some from overseas. Individual winners were selected
in the Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Venturing categories.
Taking top honors overall was Eagle Scout Philip Goolkasian
of Troop 223, Sequoia Council, California. After Philip refined his design with help from renowned graphic designer—and fellow Eagle Scout—Kit Hinrichs, the “BSA 2010” logo quickly became one of the most recognizable symbols in BSA history. The eagle, a symbol
of Scouting achievement, is worked subtly into the design as “a fitting symbol of our patriotism and outdoor activities,” Philip wrote in an essay to accompany his contest entry.
He added: “This logo is my interpretation of Boy Scouts, a symbol of our dedication to our country, our love for nature, and our heritage.”
