—A sentiment echoed by many young visitors at Adventure Base 100
a fascinating look at 100 years of Scouting, including an exhibit of historic patches and rare artifacts collected by the organization over the last century. A timeline depicted significant events in the history of the Boy Scouts of America.
This taste of Scouting adventure drew more than 286,000 visitors. Among the most popular and challenging activities for young people—and the young at heart—was the ropes course.
Climbers, wearing safety helmets and tethered to an overhead line, first had to walk along a
railing and step over the obstacles—upraised pieces of wood—that were situated in their
path. Next, they stepped onto crosswise timbers that were suspended on ropes, like a
series of wooden swings.
After crossing the swing section of
the course, climbers walked on suspended planks that aligned with their direction of travel. “That made that section a little bit
like walking across a tight rope, if there was such a thing as a tight rope that went rope,
